Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif here on Tuesday constituted a committee for proper application and enforcement of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 in the province. Punjab Minister for Law Sanaullah Khan will be chairman of the committee, while Home Department Secretary will be its Secretary.
Members will be Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab Jehanzeb Burki, Secretary Department Public Prosecution, Secretary Law Department, Inspector General Punjab, Inspector General Prisons Punjab, Prosecutor General Punjab and Additional IGP Special Branch Punjab.
The committee will ensure that cases involving only the most heinous offences were registered under Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. It will also reviewing all cases registered under the ATA 1997 in the province at the moment and make recommendations for taking further action as to each individual case. The committee will also monitor the process of investigation to ensure that all deadlines and requirements set by the law in this respect are duly met.
The committee will supervise closely the prosecution of cases under ATA 1997 by the state before the courts and to ensure proper co-ordination among all government agencies and departments regarding all administrative matters relating to investigation and prosecution of cases under ATA 1997.
The committee will meet every week and examine the progress in investigation and prosecution of all high profile cases registered under the ATA 1997. The committee will commence its proceedings immediately.
