Traffic congestion: Senate body for introduction of mass transit system in big cities

Senate Standing Committee on Environment on Thursday urged the concerned authorities to introduce mass transit system (MTS) in Karachi to overcome the mess of traffic congestion in the city.
The committee, met at the Parliament House here with Senator Mohammad Ali Barohi in the chair, stressed the need for the introduction of the MTC in all the big cites, particularly in the economic hub, Karachi, which, they said, had become the need of the hour due to rapid urbanisation.
The committee expressed serious reservations over not presenting the concerned officials at the meeting and directed them to ensure their presence in the next meeting.
The meeting was informed that the Prime Minister had planned to import some 8,000 CNG buses to be plied in all the big cities to reduce transport problems along with minimising air pollution.
It was also highlighted in the meeting that wildlife in Sindh and some other parts of the country was at the serious threat due to the rapid deforestration.
The committee also constituted a sub-committee, comprising Senator Jamal Khan Leghari, Senator Bibi Yasmeen Shah, Senator Rahat Hussain and Senator Mir Mohabat Khan Marri, giving them mandate to give fruitful suggestions for the preservation of the wildlife.
The committee expressed its serious dissatisfaction over the government measures for controlling the deforestration. Besides, the members also discussed and dismayed over the police performance to ascertain the culprits, involved in the rape of a girl at Mazar-e-Quaid a few months back, and directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), South zone in Karachi, to conduct a DNA test of all those involved in the incident.
