The expert said that the rapid increase in kidney disease has been witnessed in the past years where around 15000 peoples are being affected, annually. In his keynote address, Dr Adeeb Rizvi, Founder Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) stressed the need of taking swift measures to minimise the ratio of kidney patients in the country.
He said that due to lack of good governance and high corruption in the health sector, the medical treatment is become unaffordable for the common man. He further stressed of initiating motivation campaign among masses to induct them for social welfare programmes and hoped that it would provide long-term benefits to the country. He was speaking in a certificate distribution ceremony of Students Summer Voluntary Services Programme 2008 at SIUT here on Friday.
Kishwar, Member SIUT team, said that around 1560 students have been trained through Voluntary Service Programme in several phases. She added that some 118 volunteers have been awarded certificates in the ceremony.
SlUT has initiated this programme for school children to inculcate values of love for humanity, respect for human rights and strengthening of ethical values in the child. The module of this programme is especially structured and formulated to motivate school children to do community service. Community service is an invaluable and integral part of most school educational programme.
SlUT announced its first Voluntary Service Programme in December 2006. Parents and teachers recognised the need for well-designed and supervised social service programme, hence it received an overwhelming response, she said and added that more than 80 schools participated in this programme.
Later, several students have expressed their feeling regard this programme, saying that it has changed their perspective to life. They feel good when they have helped patients at SlUT. They come most eagerly as they feel a sense of responsibility because the patients have now become dependent on them.
