The government has asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to make sure that no mobile company can issue SIM without attaining the valid Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) of customer and dispatch it on postal address rather giving in his hand.
Any violation of this order and procedure will not be tolerated and violators will be punished under relevant law, said a statement of the interior ministry here on Monday. The interior ministry took notice of the issue raised by the Senate standing committee on interior and asked the PTA to make sure complete verification before issuing of SIM card.
It is pertinent to note that Senate standing committee on interior has raised the issue of 7.454 million unauthorised SIMs in April and asked the PTA to make sure the immediate deactivation of these illegal SIMs by cell-phone companies and on failure impose fine of Rs 350 million on each company.
Following this move by Senate body, the cell-phone companies have deactivated more than 5.1 million unauthorised SIMs and asked the extension in deadline, which was later extended to July 31. The Senate body also directed the PTA to set up software for online registration of SIMs, which is in final stage and cell-phone companies were linked with Nadra through optic fiber.
