A two-day capacity building workshop concluded at the Institute of Policy, Research and Development (IPRD), which was organised by World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan ) under European Commission funded project titled as "Water Thirsty Crops (sugarcane component)."
WWF-P Faisalabad Senior Project Officer Lal Khan Babar discussed objectives of the workshop aimed at developing the capacity of trainers. He said the WWF-P has already trained trainers under the project with respect to Better Management Practices (BMPs) in sugarcane. He also explained that these trainers are working in field for the last two years. "They are regularly organising Farmer Field Schools (FFS)," he said.
Dr Tahira Yasmin, Sugarcane Virologist, Crops Diseases Research Program, National Agriculture Research Centre (NARC), Islamabad explained different diseases of sugarcane, their symptoms in detail and damage caused by them in quantity as well as quality to sugarcane. She discussed different strains, which are damaging sugarcane crop as well as management of these diseases.
Dr Rai Niaz Ahmed, Director, Water Management Research Centre, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad explained different techniques about efficient use of water in agriculture especially sugarcane.
He discussed importance of water, its shortage globally and asked the participants to use alternate drip irrigation keeping in mind soil type as it has been tested by BMP by WWF-P in collaboration with research institutions for cotton and sugarcane. Abdul Ghani, Deputy Director Training, Plant Protection Institute, Faisalabad explained insects and pests of sugarcane, their identification as well as their management in detail.
