Lawyers, representatives of political parties and members of the civil society took out a joint rally in the provincial capital on Thursday to press for the restoration of judges.
The demonstration led by District Bar president Manzoor Qadir commenced from Aiwan-e-Adal, with activists including women, of Jamaat-i-Islami, Khaksar Tehrik, Tehrik-e-Insaaf, Pakhtun Khawa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chanting slogans in favour of an independent judiciary.
At the GPO Chowk, participants were joined by lawyers of Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) led by its president Anwar Kamal and secretary Rana Asad Khan, PML-N lawyers president Wali Muhammad Khan, Pakistan Bar Council member Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari along with a large number of lawyers.
Protesters carrying placards and portraits of the deposed judges marched towards Punjab Assembly Hall where the rally terminated. LHCBA president Anwar Kamal and LDBA president Manzoor Qadir addressing the participants in front of Punjab Assembly building, appreciated the role of the civil society and political parties in the struggle for the restoration of the deposed judges.
They said that the lawyers' movement has entered a very important phase and it will be made more effective soon. They observed that if Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar approve their proposals for once a week countrywide sit-in protests and closure of courts every Thursday, then the bar bodies will begin a new phase of demonstrations.
Lawyer leaders asked the government to restore the judges as promised by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, adding that the struggle for the restoration of the judges and an independent judiciary will continue till their objectives are achieved.
Khaksar chief Hamid-ud-Din Almashraqi, JUP leaders Engr Salimullah Khan, Qari Zawwar Bahadur, Tehrik-e-Insaaf leader Ahsan Rashid, PKMAP provincial chief Mateen Khan and others were also present on the occasion. Earlier, meetings of the general houses of LHCBA and LDBA were held before the rally.
