Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (Paapam) has accused the Punjab Labour Department of harassment and threatened to close down its 200 engineering units. Talking to Business Recorder here on Saturday.
Paapam Chairman Aslam Malik alleged that officials of provincial labour department and social security are disturbing industrial peace by unlawfully going inside their manufacturing units and interacting with their employees.
He said the prevailing labour and social security laws do not permit the government officials to go inside the industrial units without owners' permission and have direct contact with the employees/labourers.
He contended that the government officials were violating sanctity of the engineering and manufacturing units by their uncalled for visits and accusations against the employers. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had directed the labour secretary to conduct a survey of factories to ensure that minimum wages announced by the government were paid to the workers.
Malik said Paapam is holding an important meeting in Karachi on Monday, July 28 to discuss Trade Policy 2008-09, import of CNG buses from India and problems being faced by the local auto and vendor industry which had provided jobs to hundreds of thousands of engineers, skilled and semi-skilled technicians.
Malik said Paapam is an effective link among government, assemblers and the auto-parts manufacturers to enhance technical expertise and management co-operation amongst its respective members.
He said with a registered membership base of over 200 tier one part manufacturers and a general manufacturers base of 880 companies, Paapam has under its wing companies manufacturing parts for Pakistani's cars, motorcycle, tractors, trucks and buses assemblers. Malik called upon the government to protect its domestic auto industry before allowing the import of CNG buses from India.
He said that Paapam member firms want to manufacture sophisticated parts eg pistons, engine valves, gaskets, camshafts shock absorbers, and struts, steering mechanism, cylinder head, wheel hubs, brake drums, wheel bumpers, instruments and instrument panels, gears of all types, radiators, cylinder liners, blinkers and lights, door locks and auto air conditioners, etc.
