'Dyslipidemia is an altered balance in the body of various lipid carrier particles called as lipoproteins; serve to transport lipids from one part of the body to another.
The 'good cholesterol', which is the HDL and the 'bad cholesterol' comprising the LDL, VLDL, and chlyomicrons are two of its categories', said Professor of Medicine Ziauddin University, Mahmud Jilani, while speaking at the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Programme held at the Ziauddin University, North Nazimabad.
He said that the bad cholesterol increases concentration causes like deposition of lipids in the blood vessels of human the body. The process decreases the lumen of the blood vessel resulting in thrombosis that leads to severe or complete occlusion of the vessel.
Consequently, the tissue distal to the site of obstruction due to lack of oxygen fails to survive. This is particularly dangerous if it occurs in the heart or the brain causing heart attack or stroke.
Stating about the cure of the disease Professor Jilani said that in the 1990's 'wonder drugs' called 'Statins' were discovered to lower the bad cholesterol LDL and elevate the good protective cholesterol HDL.
Further, the 'wonder drug' caused significant reduction in death and disability from health attacks and stroke. Statins were considered as the 'New Aspirin', he added. He also said that the primary target of cholesterol management was the LDL as its low counts lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes.-PR
