Citing the need to hold down state spending, Washington state Governor Christie Gregoire on Monday ordered state agencies to impose a hiring freeze, set aside plans to buy new equipment and cut fuel use. Gregoire asked state agencies to reduce their fuel consumption by 5 percent from 2007 levels and imposed a ban on non-emergency travel.
"I am asking each of you to step up your efforts to increase savings," Gregoire said in a statement. "The high price of energy is hurting our businesses and our families. Anything we can do to reduce fuel consumption will ease the burden on our budget and on taxpayers.
In late June, Fitch Ratings assigned its 'AA' rating to $823.1 million of Washington state general obligation bonds scheduled for sale in July and affirmed its 'AA' rating on about $12.9 billion of outstanding state general obligation debt with a positive outlook.
