People belonging to different walks of life have strongly criticised the decision by the coalition government to impeach President Pervez Musharraf, saying that the political leaders are undermining national interest and have underestimated country's political situation.
They allege that the coalition and its supporters have made a very hasty decision, which may push the country into a deep crisis and derail democracy. They are also critical that leaders of the PPP and PML-N, during a series of meetings did not discuss urgent issues like the role of the ISI and the poor economic condition of the country, especially with regards to inflation.
People asked further felt that the country is in grave condition and that at this time, the politics of confrontation are unfeasible, with dangerous clouds hovering over the country but leaders.
Despite this, they contend that the country's leaders are acting short-sightedly. They felt that it was high time political parties concentrated on bringing the country out of crisis instead of engaging in confrontation.
The popularity of the coalition government is decreasing sharply because of its silence over crucial issues like the ISI, poor economic polices and price hikes. People felt that both PML-N and PPP leaders remained engaged in drawing room politics while failing to show national spirit, causing the people to lose confidence.
The hasty decision regarding the impeachment of the president have paved the way for initiating horse-trading and promote cronyism in the assemblies if the coalition hope to muster the majority needed for the impeachment.
Cronyism, people feel, has always played a vital role in party strengthening and the formation of governments at the provincial and federal levels. They also say that it is the national, political and moral duty of political parties to work collectively in developing unity among the masses to cope with the multifarious problems of the country.
The people said they were not interested in the restoration of deposed judges or the impeachment of President Musharraf, as due to the poor and ineffective policies of the government, the miseries of the common man have been increased manifold. The restoration of deposed judges and impeachment issues are the issues of the PPP and PML-N, not those of the general public, they added.
