Sliding trend was seen on the interbank market on Friday as the rupee shed five paisa versus dollar for buying and selling at 72.55 and 72.60, dealers said. The demand for dollars was up as importers were busy in forward buying to meet the payment requirements, they said.
In the fifth Asian trade, dollar surged across the board, hitting a five-month high against euro and a 17-month peak against pound as the European Central Bank's caution on the growth outlook reinforced worries of a faltering global economy.
The dollar index vaulted to its highest in more than five months, with investors and analysts saying the US currency is staging a broad rebound from record lows struck earlier in the year as the global slowdown takes a toll on other major currencies.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee held its overnight levels against dollar for buying at 73.05 and selling at 73.25, they added. The rupee firmly looked ahead against euro, gaining sharply for buying and selling at Rs 110.55 and Rs 110.70, they said.
