We live in world where Information Technology and computer software science are specilialised fields. There is abundance of highly educated university graduates and masters who have specialised in these fields. Airline business is a very competitive field, which requires competent skilled specialists to keep pace with times.
Revenue audit, E-Ticketing, procurement analysis and Information Systems are key to keep a tab on pilferages, which have plagued PIA the national airline of Pakistan. Just have a look at Emirates Airlines MIS department or Singapore Airlines or even Air India and the reality will stare back at you. Ability to handle a personal Laptop is a common phenomenon these days and cannot be confused with the skills acquired by a specialist in Computer Science or Information Systems.
It is mediocity, incompetence and political interference that has ruined PIA and continues to do so. In PIA there is a section called Management Information Systems, words that tend to give the impression that the airline is keeping pace with latest technological advancements related to aviation business.
The airline has acquired Software Packages valued at millions of dollars, but the persons appointed to implement these systems are either not qualified, or are the same that have over the years robbed it of billions in pilferages.
When appointments are made to head such departments a committee must verify the suitability of the gentlemen viz-a-viz his professional qualifications, skills and experience in the field.
It is an annihilation of merit, when a person who cannot even write a proper paragraph in English and hardly able to handle a computer, which any Tom Dick or Harry can do these days, has been appointed to head the Management Information System of an airline, on the verge of financial collapse and plagued by incompetence and mediocrity.
