A prisoner was killed and two policemen were hurt when powerful explosions took place here in armoury of Crimes Branch police station in cantonment area, in the wee hours on Sunday, police sources told APP.
The explosions, which continued about more than two hours, destroyed completely a portion of the building of the police station and damaged many vehicles, besides smashed windows of nearby buildings, police said.
The severe explosions continually took place after a brief pause which triggered panic in the area and could be heard with big bang even far from the place, a resident who identified himself as Muhammad Yasin said.
CCPO Quetta Muhammad Akbar Arain told APP that that the cause of the explosions could not be ascertained immediately. He dispelled the impression that a rocket hit the police station and said: "A detailed report and cause of the explosions may be produced after completion of the investigation. Investigators are examining the site and collecting evidences about the incident."
The CCPO identified the captive victim as Ameer Hamza who was killed in the police station after explosions took place. He said two policemen were hurt and they could not be called as injured, because they received very minor injuries.
The CCPO also dispelled the impression that some captives had escaped from the Crimes Branch police station after the explosions and said no prisoner escaped from there. The Fire Brigade team reached the police station and controlled the fire, which sparked after the explosions. The CCPO Quetta, DIG police, Rehmatullah Nizai and DIG police (operation) Wazir Khan Nasir and other senior police officials visited the police station and reviewed the losses caused after the explosions.
