A German dentist, whose hobby became an obsession, won an Olympic gold medal in the individual three-day evening competition on Tuesday Hinrich Romeike, riding his gelding Marius, left 24 rivals in his dust as he completed a perfect round in the final jumping component.
He finished the round as he began, with 54.20 penalty points. The silver medal went to Gina Miles of the USA, who rode McKinlaigh in a perfect round to finish on 56.10. Third place and the individual bronze went to Kristina Cook of Britain, who clinched her medal with Miners Frolic and 57.40 penalty points.
And another medal hopeful, Germany's Ingrid Klimke riding Abraxxas, clipped the second of the nine jumps at Hong Kong's Shatin arena, to end her Olympics on 59.70 points. A true amateur, Romeike told reporters he rode "for pleasure, after I have finished my work at the clinic at six or 6.30."
