Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) President Arif Nizami here on Thursday hailed the government for moving a bill in the National Assembly for removal of curbs imposed on media by the last regime.
Talking to APP telephonically, Arif Nizami appreciated the government's initiative of moving the bill in the National Assembly for revoking amendments to the Press, Newspapers, News Agencies and Book Registration Ordinance, 2002 (PNNABRO). The bill was moved in the parliament by Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman.
"It's good omen that our suggestions are being given proper consideration and the bill will help ensure freedom of Press in true spirit," Nizami observed. The CPNE chief said that now media especially the print-media would have to act in a more responsible manner while enjoying the press freedom.
Nizami also called for abolition of all other restrictions imposed on the media organisations so as to improve their working and ensure free access to information practically. He criticised all the moves such as ban on advertisements, which is the lifeline of the media, to affect the policies of the newspapers and other media organisations.
The CPNE is holding its Standing Committee's meeting on August 18 and after that it would give a comprehensive reaction on the said bill, he added. It is to mention that the last government had made several amendments to the PNNABRO to put under close surveillance and control the media organisations, working journalists, political forces, and the civil society as well.
