Federal Minister for Information, Sherry Rehman has termed the resignation of Pervez Musharraf as success of democracy saying that it is a triumph for democracy and vindication of nation's determined stand for a civilian political order.
"Musharraf had turned into liability for the nation as his anti-democratic credentials are clear and caused huge dent to Pakistan," she said while commenting on the resignation of Pervez Musharraf. "The eight year rule of Musharraf has been fraught with gross constitutional violations and acts of political divisiveness, which had not only put democracy at stake but also created serious economic and security challenges for the country", she said.
She said that Musharraf had to resign on February 18, but he delayed till August 18, reinforcing the public will and strengthening the coalition government's legitimate struggle to put democracy on track. "It also echoes Mohtarma Shaheed's mantra that democracy is the best revenge. Our success is also a tribute to all those who gave their lives for a return to democracy," she added.
The minister said that people of Pakistan had paid heavy price while suffering one-man rule, adding, "it was General Musharraf's reluctance to clear the way for a civilian rule that triggered political disorder in the country."
Meanwhile, talking to reporters outside Zardari House on Monday, Ahsan Iqbal, Secretary Information of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) said that impeachment and trial of Musharraf is trial of the attitude of ruining the Constitution and punishment of a dictator will block the path of martial law in Pakistan forever. "The crimes of Musharraf against Pakistan, Constitution, democracy, parliament and rule of law are unpardonable and he will be tried under the Constitution", Ahsan Iqbal said.
After Musharraf's resignation, nation will shortly hear another good news about restoration of the judiciary to its November 3 position, Ahsan Iqbal said, adding that the top coalition leadership will decide the means to reinstate the deposed judges. "Our stance regarding the judges issue is clear and there will be no compromise on this important issue", he said.
He said that the leadership of ruling coalition in its meeting will discuss the future strategy to repeal 17th amendment and all other unconstitutional amendments, which Musharraf made in the Constitution for protection of his unconstitutional rule.
After one hour of his resignation, the economy of Pakistan has shown positive changes with stock exchange gained momentum, rupee gained against dollar, Ahsan Iqbal said, adding that ruling coalition will formulate the policies to put country's economy on right path. "We will resolve all the problems of nation with the help of people of Pakistan", he added. Ahsan said that the joyous people in streets all over Pakistan is ample proof that people were eager to get rid of the dictator.
