The three-day 'ninth International Conference on Pure Mathematics 2008' has been inaugurated here on Friday. The conference was jointly organised by Quaid-e-Azam University, Preston University and Pakistan Mathematical Society (PMS). The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Science Foundation are also two important sponsors of this mega international conference.
Ahsan Iqbal, Member National Assembly of Pakistan and former Federal Education minister, was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the conference. In his keynote address, Ahsan Iqbal said the use of Mathematics as a tool particularly for scientific research could not be the least exaggerated.
Nations, who had achieved unparalleled success in the field of science and engineering, had been able to do so through rigorous and intensive use of the mathematics as a tool in their scientific and engineering research, he maintained.
He expressed the hope that the distinguished experts, who had come from all over the world, would find the conference an effective forum to share their invaluable experiences in the field of pure mathematics with each other.
Earlier, in his welcome address, PMS President Professor. Dr Qaiser Mushtaq extended a warm welcome to the chief guest and briefly spoke about the endeavours of the PMS to promote research in pure mathematics in the public and private universities in the country. Dr Qaiser expressed his gratitude to Preston University Chancellor Dr Abdul Basit for playing a pivotal role in the organisation and sponsorship of the conference. He also lauded the valuable sponsorship of the HEC and the Pakistan Science Foundation in this regard.
In his remarks, Dr Abdul Basit thanked the PMS and Quaid-e-Azam University for providing Preston University the opportunity to be a significant partner in organisation of the "ninth International Conference on Pure Mathematics Conference". He said it was truly an honour for Preston to have been able to contribute towards the organisation of the ninth International Pure Mathematics Conference 2008.
He expressed the hope that both experts who had come from abroad and their colleagues from Pakistan would have meaningful interaction on the subject of the conference and make significant recommendations in this regard. Quaid-e-Azam University Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Zafar Iqbal Cheema congratulated the organisers and sponsors of the conference for taking the initiative to hold the 'ninth International Conference on Pure Mathematics 2008', in Islamabad.
The ninth International Conference on Pure Mathematics 2007 is the continuation of the series of pure mathematics conferences held during 2000-06. It is a thematic conference on Algebra, Analysis and Geometry, which will provide a stimulating opportunity to met experts from various countries in a variety of branches of pure mathematics.
Eminent Mathematicians from the world over are participating in the conference, while more than 60 lectures on variety of topics related to the main theme of the conference are expected to be delivered during the course of the three-day event.
