The nomination papers of Pakistan People's Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League-N candidate Chief Justice Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui (Retd), Pakistan Muslim League-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Syed and 31 other candidates for Presidential elections have been filed here on Tuesday.
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Kunwar Muhammad Dilshad told reporters that a total of 34 candidates have filed their nomination papers for the next presidential election scheduled to be held on September 6. He said that in Islamabad, the ECP received 10 nomination papers, 14 in Punjab, nine in Sindh and one in NWFP. The ECP Secretary said that the scrutiny of the nomination papers would be held till August 28, by the Returning Officers for the presidential election.
The candidates could withdraw papers till August 30. The final list would be issued on August 30. Federal Law Minister Farooq Naek has submitted the nomination papers of Peoples Party Co-Chairman Asif Zardari to Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq. Faryal Talpur's nomination papers were also submitted as covering candidate.
Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman, Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali, Minster for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf, Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khurshid Shah, Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar, Senator Baber Awan, Senator Raza Rabbani, Advisor to the Prime Minister Manzoor Watto, Rehmatullah Kakar and others were also present at this occasion.
A larger number of Peoples Party workers were gathered outside the office of Election Commission, chanting slogans in favour of Asif Zardari. PML-N's candidate Chief Justice Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui (Retd) also filed his nomination papers at the ECP, while PML-N Secretary General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal and Makhdoom Javed Hashmi accompanied him.
Roedad Khan filed his papers as covering candidate of former justice Siddiqui. The PML-N supporters gathered outside the office of the Election Commission chanted slogans. PML-Q candidate Mushahid Hussain Syed also filed his nomination papers at the ECP, Islamabad. PML-Q president Chaudhry Shuja'at Hussain, leader of the opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Amir Muqam and others also accompanied him.
