The government decision to abandon the construction of controversial Kalabagh Dam and acceptance of Pakhtoons' demand to rename NWFP Pukhtoonkhawa have won the Awami National Party (ANP) support for Zardari in the run to presidential slot, said ANP central leader and Senator Haji Adeel.
Talking to the Business Recorder, Haji Adeel reiterated his support for the Pakistan People's Party during the presidential election, saying that his party would vote for Asif Ali Zardari. He said: "Our stance always remained clear as we always fought for the rights of our province. We would vote in favour of our province." Zardari not only rejected the Kalabagh Dam project, but also assured us to change the name of the province.
He said that the ANP had a total strength of 65 - 13 in National Assembly; two in Senate; one in Sindh; 46 in NWFP; and three in Balochistan. He said that they had tried their level best to convince the militants to stop militancy and come to the conference table, but every time the militants had broken the agreement.
He said now the militants were targeting the ANP leaders and workers and destroying their property. The ANP Senator said that both the ANP and the PPP had the same point of view regarding the ongoing operation in Swat and Tribal areas.
He said that the ANP had shown its anger at a statement attributed to Zardari, using the ANP's name on the issue of judges' reinstatement, but Zardari denied the statement, saying that he had been misquoted. Haji Adeel said that the ANP wanted the restoration of all the deposed judges "without any minus or plus formula".
