Finance Minister Syed Naveed Qamar said on Saturday that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Presidential candidate Asif Ali Zardari is mentally fit and does not need any psychological treatment. "Mr Zardari is mentally fit and qualified to stand for the presidential elections. He will win easily as this election is one sided," he said, in response to a question on Asif Ali Zardari's chances of success.
The Financial Times had reported a few days ago that Asif Zardari had claimed in certified court documents that he suffered from psychological problems, including dementia, and was under treatment in the US. Asked why Mr Zardari is not be examined by a psychologist to assess his mental health condition, Qamar said that there was no need for his check up as he is fit to be the President.
"You have met him several times, there in no sign of mental illness," he replied to another question. Asked why Asif Zardari is being fielded for Presidential elections when his reputation remains tarnished, in spite of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) gifted by President Musharraf, Naveed Qamar failed to provide any concrete response.
However Qamar admitted that the Swiss court had not withdrawn the case against Zardari: "GoP had filed a case against Zardari and GoP has now taken it back," he stated. When asked about the reports that the establishment does not want Mr Zardari as President, he said that establishment is not creating any hurdles in the Presidential elections.
