Sindh Minister for Human Rights, Ms Nadia Gabol, has called for abolishing the jirga system. A statement issued here on Wednesday said that the minister has sent a summary to the Sindh Chief Minister in this respect with the request to approach the federal government to take an appropriate action regarding the jirga system and declare it unlawful, illegal and against the provisions of the constitution and law of the land.
Ms Nadia taking note of recent incident in which five women were reportedly buried alive in Balochistan. She said that the jirgas are male-dominated quasi-judicial system targeting women in Pakistan.
The minister said that the majority of the people in rural areas are illiterate and do not know how to approach the official judicial system of the country. She was of the view that the government should urgently consider and reform formal criminal justice system and make it more effective and independent. Ms Nadia also suggested that the government should also introduce and enforce laws against the death penalty awarded by jirga in the country.
