The renowned social worker Mukhtaran Mai has said that despite tall claims of the government to root out anti-women practices, yet violence against women was increasing. They were being disfigured by throwing acid, by chopping their noses, ears, and arms.
While talking to newsmen here on Wednesday. She said all the political forces should agree that heinous practices like alleged killing of girls in Balochistan could not be condoned. Mai said that there was no justification for honour killings and the government has an obligation to stop such practices by punitive legislative and institutional measures,
"In the past, the PPP had moved legislation on honour killing in parliament on several occasions. A legislation that denies indemnity to the perpetrators of such crimes is the most effective tool to fight this practice," she added. Mukhtaran Mai said a democratic society could not tolerate such act that endorsed eliminating a life in the name of honour, she said.
"This is a very encouraging sign that unanimous response received on Balochistan incident since earlier such acts would always receive a mixed response from both the houses." She said that we should work to facilitate institutional structures to ensure that our policy actions are backed by institutional capabilities to respond to such crimes," she said.
