A multinational oil and gas exploration company has been accused of depriving local community of Makori village of safe drinking water, as it is contaminated due to the oil and gas drilling activities.
According to a spokesman of World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) here on Monday, for more than four years, an oil and gas exploration company, is actively exploring oil and gas resources in the vicinity of Village Makori, District Karak, NWFP.
About six months back, a local NGO with the consent of local community of Makori village put forward an application to WWF that the local community is facing some major problems due to the oil and gas drilling activities in their village.
The application mentioned that the local community is deprived of their basic need and fundamental right of safe drinking water, as the drinking water is being contaminated due to the oil and gas drilling activities. Although, the company has promised the local villagers of Makori to install a tube-well to provide safe drinking water this promise is yet to be fulfilled.
Moreover, WWF-P Director General Ali Hassan Habib also wrote a letter to the oil company in February 2008 indicating and highlighting the problems faced by local villagers and requested the company to fulfil its promises and moral obligations under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) norms. But even after six months gone, the WWF-P and local communities are still waiting for their reply and expecting that the multinational company will comply with its CSR norms and fulfil its obligations and promises to supply clean drinking water to the local community.
