Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the government, as part of its overall transport policy, is encouraging production of low-cost, fuel-efficient vehicles in the country to cater the needs of the growing middle class in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister said this while talking to Hirofumi Nagao, Managing Director and CEO of Pak Suzuki Company Ltd, who called on him at PM House on Saturday. The Prime Minister said that the government would also tailor its policies with a view to facilitating the manufacture of low-cost vehicles. He said that the government was encouraging use of CNG vehicles as they are less damaging to the environment besides being affordable for the middle class.
Gilani said there was need to match the production of vehicles with the growing demand so that their delivery time should be reduced. He said there was great demand for CNG-run jeeps in the rural areas of Pakistan and the management of Pak Suzuki should consider prioritising the manufacturing of affordable CNG jeeps for the farming community.
Hirofumi Nagao informed the Prime Minister that Pak Suzuki Company has completed its 25 years in Pakistan, in addition to achieving the production mark of one million vehicles this year. He said that Pak Suzuki is the only CNG car manufacturer in the country, and added that the auto industry sector has a lot of potential in Pakistan.
About future plans of his company, Nagao said that his company has taken a number of initiatives to bring in new technology to Pakistan for producing more parts locally, to introduce low cost vehicles for lower income group and to make Pakistan an exporting country of its products to the Middle East and Central Asia.
