Three more polio cases have been detected in NWFP and Sindh raising the number of poliovirus affected children up to 46. According to the sources of World Health Organisation (WHO), one case each in Peshawar, Dir (NWFP) and one in district Jaccababad (Sindh) have been found. The children were infected with P-1 and P-III virus.
WHO sources said P-I virus is very dangerous and epidemic, which could affect 312 more children around and the toll of affected children may increase. On the other hand, spokesman of ministry of health expressed his ignorance and said he has no such information. He said government has issued directions to conduct three special campaigns against polio in the last quarter of 2008 keeping in view the growing number of infected children.
The federal government has directed all the four provincial governments and Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas to make arrangements of feeding polio drops to children in September, October and November. Campaign against polio will be continued from September 15-19, October 13-16 and November 24-27, the spokesman concluded.
