Chief Election Commissioner former Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq has asked the Members of the Parliament (MPs) and Provincial Assemblies to submit yearly statements of assets and liabilities of their own, their spouses and dependants to the Election Commission by September 30, 2008 otherwise they may be stopped from performing duties.
This is a mandatory requirement under the Representation of the People Act, (Section-42A of 1976) and Section 25A of Senate Election Act 1975. He said the statements of assets and liabilities will be published in the official Gazette and copies thereof may be obtained on payment of prescribed fee.
The Chief Election Commission said that if a member submits the statement of assets and liabilities which is found to be false in material particulars, he may be proceeded against under section 82 for committing the offence of corrupt practice.
