Four little boys, all of them cousins, were suddenly smashed to death, last Thursday in the 2.5 square km Manora Islands, off Karachi port under the debris of a worn out wall of the dilapidated and abandoned building of the Federal Government Public School.
Quoting witnesses, a news report has revealed that the students of the school were having snacks during a recess break under the shade of the wall of the dilapidated building when it collapsed with a bang instantly killing the little ones, giving the victims no chance to run for safety. It sent a wave of panic all around the place, and it took some time for all of them to make out what had really happened.
And since there was nothing visible of any rescue operation, the people of the area along with those who had rushed to the scene, joined hands to do whatever was deemed expedient. It was only after an effort lasting around half-an-hour, that the rescuers could manage to pull out the trapped children, immediately taking them to the PNS Hamaliya Hospital for treatment and telling the school authorities to inform the family members of the children.
The four children, however, had succumbed to multiple wounds. The grieved families are reportedly related to Pakistan People's Party leader Bahawal Khan and belongs to Matta (Swat).
However, although the school was shifted to its nearby new building, a few years ago, its canteen had remained attached the old building. One of the bereaved parents complained that they did not let him see the children at the hospital until he protested, saying the children's heads were smashed and their faces disfigured.
Another grieving father wailed that his child did not want to go to school that day as he wanted to play a new video game he had bought only the day before, but as the call of death would have it, he did go there, not in uniform though, but only to join his cousins in the recess-break. And, as usually happens on such occasions, he loudly demanded punishment for those responsible for it, so as to effectively to avert such disasters, but who cares, as they say.
According to one, the entire building was dangerously dilapidated and any portion could have fallen down anytime but the condition of the collapsed wall was utterly dangerous, recalling that they had urged the school administration time and again, to get the building demolished as soon as possible.
More to this, the witnesses said the teaching staff of the school remained confined to the staff room for some time as the visibly shaken and enraged people surrounded the school building. However, they said, the people later dispersed peacefully when the elders of the area intervened and convinced them that the school administration was in no way responsible for the fall of the worn-out building.
Be that as it may, it has also been revealed that there is no dearth of dilapidated structures on the visibly long neglected island. There must be some authority in the new local bodies system at least, to care about such things.
