A devastating fire reduced the entire office infrastructure of Pakistan Customs at Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) into ashes on Tuesday evening. According to fire brigade sources the blaze erupted in one of the 6-8 rooms of PACCS department of Pakistan Customs at around 7:45 pm which soon engulfed the entire building.
They said the fire, which broke out "probably" due to electric short circuit, went out of control because of the inattentive people around who were busy in "Iftar" after observing the daylong fasting. The sources said at least two fire brigade vehicles of Karachi Port Trust took part in the fire fighting mission and were able to extinguish the blaze after two-hours of hectic efforts at around 10 pm.
They said the inferno had completely destroyed the office infrastructure and false ceiling of the building besides the office of deputy collector Pakistan Customs. The sources said the center of fire was a room inside the gutted building where Customs officials used to store samples of different exportable and importable commodities to be handled at the container terminal. However, when contacted no official from PICT was ready to provide detail of the incident and kept referring this reporter to each other for the required information of the incident.
