Time and again it has been proven that Karachi's public parks are up for grabs. The Kidney Hill land earmarked as a public utility park, has been successfully occupied by Overseas Housing Society with the help of city government after 16 years of litigation. Land allocated for public utility parks belongs to the citizens of a city.
The city government just has the mandate to manage the affairs and does not in any way have the right to sell, or give land to an unauthorised party, that belongs to its citizens. Law of the jungle prevails in Karachi and the mighty powerful land mafia has legitimised one more expensive real estate take-over.
Karachi's poor public are the lone sufferers in this city, which is becoming a concrete jungle, with minimal green belts, and heading for an environmental disaster. We all know the powerful connections of the land mafia with the ruling elite, including the close connections of Overseas Housing Society with the present rulers.
This is embarrassing for the law abiding citizens of Pakistan, who wonder why somebody in Islamabad does not take notice of this daylight robbery. Karachi's public parks are the property of the citizens of Karachi and nobody, including the city government, has a right to make compromises, which deny the citizens of their rights.
