A ship carrying 25,000 metric tons of urea from Saudi Arabia has arrived at Karachi Port Trust (KPT) early Friday, the port sources said. They said that MV Hanjin Calcutta has arrived at 6:15am on Friday morning and will be taken to Berthing area as soon as space available.
It may be noted that the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) has contracted for the import of 135,000 MT of urea from Saudi Arabia on urgent basis to meet the shortage - that brought production to a halt - of this vital input to boost agriculture production in the country. An official of Minfal said it was the second ship with urea, while more ships were expected in next couple of weeks.
A Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) official said that 20,000 metric tons of urea, which arrived on September 3, had been dispatched to the marketing companies for onward distribution.
