Closing stock market indices
Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Tuesday.
EUROPE STOCK EXCHANGE: European shares ended sharply lower for the second straight day as investors fretted about the fate of a $700 billion financial sector rescue plan which the United States is trying to push through Congress.
The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index ended 1.6 percent lower at 1,108.54 points, adding to a 2.1 percent loss on Monday after a record surge on Friday when news of the plan emerged and several countries instituted short selling bans. Banks took most points off the index, with UBS falling 7.9 percent and Royal Bank of Scotland losing 5.9 percent.
FRANKFURT STOCK EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6,068.53 points, down 39.22 or 0.64 percent.
PARIS STOCK EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 4,139.82 points, down 83.69 or 1.98 percent.
ZURICH STOCK EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 6,805.53 points, down 81.86 or 1.19 percent.
MILAN STOCK EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 20,623 points, down 302 or 1.44 percent.
TOKYO STOCK EXCHANGE: Japanese markets were closed on Tuesday to mark the Autumn Equinox. On Monday the Nikkei average ended up 169.73 points at 12,090.59.
SYDNEY STOCK EXCHANGE: Australian shares retreated 1.9 percent, breaking a sharp two-session rebound, as doubts grew about whether a $700 billion US financial bailout package would work, weighing down on major bank stocks. The S&P/ASX 200 index ended down 97 points at 4,923.5, after rising 4.5 percent on Monday.
JOHANNESBURG STOCK EXCHANGE: South African stocks closed down sharply, as global markets and local political worries weighed, while the rand was weaker after a volatile trading session. The All-share index closed at 24,923.34 points, down 970.09 or 3.75 percent. The All Gold index closed at 1,896.71 points, up 63.58 or 3.47 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 18,018.08 points, down 716.51 or 3.82 percent.
