Punjab Population Welfare Minister Neelam Jabbar Chaudhry stressed upon the doctors to launch massive awareness campaign for sensitising the people about hazardous aspects of smoking with a view to preventing cardiovascular diseases and various types of lungs cancer.
Talking to various delegations, on the eve of World Heart Day here Sunday, she said government is paying full attention towards provision of state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to the people at grass root level.
The Population Welfare Department's health centres are also providing general treatment facilities including mother and child health, treatment for general ailment as well as medicines are also provided to the visiting patients, she added. Neelam Jabbar said that in Pakistan, more than 40 percent of the adult population, over 45 year of age, suffers from non-communicable disease, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer. This trend seems to be on the rise, which will create significant health economic implications for developing countries, he maintained.
She said that the risk factors involved in heart diseases could be controlled through exercises and living a simple life, however, he also stressed the need for creating awareness among the general public about the heart diseases and their risk factors, ie smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity as well as physical inactivity and use of tobacco.
"The people should live a simple life and change their eating habits to protect themselves from cardiovascular diseases", she added. The minister said that steps are being taken to provide education and healthcare facilities to the common people, especially in far flung areas.
