Italy will create a special body to speed up decisions on much-needed energy projects, Economic Development Minister Claudio Scajola said on Monday. Authorisation of big industrial projects is a lengthy, multi-stage process which requires approvals from central and local officials.
The process can take years, blocking investments in developing energy and infrastructure such as liquefied natural gas plants and power stations. Scajola said the centre-right government had drafted a package of measures aimed at speeding up energy projects. It includes creation of a special expert group where government and regional authorities would work together on major energy projects. "Our goal is to put an end to regulatory uncertainty which slows down or even impedes realisation of projects," Scajola told an energy conference.
