A Milan court on Saturday formally suspended Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's corruption trial but petitioned the Constitutional Court over a new law protecting him from prosecution. Prosecutors had no choice but to suspend the 18-month old trial because of the law passed in July by the parliament, dominated by Berlusconi's centre-right coalition.
The law grants immunity from prosecution to the four highest ranking politicians in the state while they are in office. The court, however, decided to continue proceedings against Berlusconi's co-accused, British lawyer David Mills.
