Published October 18, 2008

Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCK EXCHANGE: European shares closed higher, gaining 36.36 points, buoyed by energy stocks tracking a recovery in crude and capping a volatile week. At the close, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 4.24 percent at 894.77 points after rising as high as 899.08 points.
The index gained four percent on the week, but has lost 40.9 percent this year on worries a recession will affect the prospects of companies across the board and add to the effects of banking failures.
FRANKFURT STOCK EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 4781.33 points, up 158.52 or 3.43 percent, and recovering 237.02 points in the week.
PARIS STOCK EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 3329.92 points, up 148.92 or 4.68 percent on the day, and better off by 153.43 points since last weekend.
ZURICH STOCK EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 6099.62 points, up 381.09 or 6.66 percent, climbing 752.40 points over the week.
MILAN STOCK EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 16531 points, up 660 or 4.16 percent, and grabbing back 1,093 points over the last five days.
MELBOURNE STOCK EXCHANGE: Australian shares fell one percent, reversing early gains of more than 3 percent, as the growing prospect of a global recession hit bank shares and top miners. The S&P/ASX 200 index ended down 42.6 points at 3,970.8, up 10.1 points from seven days ago.
JOHANNESBURG STOCK EXCHANGE: South Africa's rand steadied against the dollar as some investors saw buying opportunities in the currency after it weakened sharply this week, while gains in index heavyweight miners boosted local stocks. The All-share index closed at 20139.59 points, up 43.63 or 0.22 percent on the day but down 455.64 points in the week.
The All Gold index closed at 1738.5 points, down 119.47 or 6.43 percent, and shedding 160.09 points since last Friday. The Industrial index closed at 15767.66 points, down 151.2 or 0.95 percent, dropping just 22.10 points since last weekend.
