Nafisa Shah, member National Assembly and former Nazima of District Khairpur has been given South Asian Award for her contribution to exemplary governance in Pakistan. The first ever 'Celebrating Womanhood South Asian Region Recognition Awards 2008' were given to one woman each from Saarc countries, at an event organised by Creative Statements of Nepal in Kathmandu on Monday.
The awards were conferred by Nepalese minister Hisila Yami on the outstanding women by for their contribution to culture, education, good governance and peace, says a message received here from Pakistan Embassy in Kathmandu.
According to citation, Nafisa Shah from Pakistan set new standards of integrity in her conflict-torn and crime-ridden district as district Nazima. Being one of the two women to head the district, Nafisa led oppressed and poor women in dealing with injustice and made Khairpur a model district of community-supported development. Nafisa has also made outstanding contribution to education, and has been named among the 1000 outstanding women in the world. She was nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for remarkably administrating Khairpur. Speaking on the occasion, Nafisa Shah said she was deeply inspired by her leader Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed who laid her life for the cause of democracy. The domain of 'Celebrating Womanhood Navadevi Awards for Nepali Women', established in 2002, was enhanced to South Asia women this time to encourage their skills, knowledge and wisdom.
