Due to negligence of federal EPI cell, ministry of health, Pentavalent vaccine worth Rs 3 billion, administered to the new born babies has become a health hazard. According to sources, the ministry had to kick off Pentavalent vaccination campaign in July this year, but this delay by EPI cell has put the lives of millions of new born babies at risk.
The vaccine is a safeguard against tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, pertussis, neonatal tetanus, measles and hepatitis B. A major donor GEVA, which has donated Rs 60.8 million for the year 2009 to 2012 for EPI expressed shock saying that vaccines in such a large quantity was wasted by the negligence of few persons responsible for its proper maintenance and monitoring.
