More than 9 percent children die before their 5th birthday and one in 362 women die due to delivery by unskilled birth attendants, while only 47 percent children under two years receive proper immunisations doses of five major diseases, reveals a survey report here on Wednesday.
The Demographic and Health Surveys conducted by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Institute of Population Studies was launched in a meeting of public health professionals at the National Research Institute of Fertility Care (NIRFC).
"US government helped Pakistan in developing health database for proper planning of the health care delivery system to provide better facilities to the people," said Kay Anske, US Consul General in Karachi. She said that the survey will help policy makers and donors to invest in priority areas for addressing the most crucial problems affecting women and children.
Population Welfare Ministry conducted the survey in collaboration with the US firm Macro International. Since 2002 United States has provided more than $2 billion to Pakistan to improve health, education, economic growth, democratic governance and to reconstruct areas affected by the October 2005 earthquake.
