There has been 40 percent decrease in over all street crimes in Karachi with cell phone snatching reduced by 52 percent and vehicle snatching reported a significant decrease of 50 percent. This was stated by Inspector General Police Sindh, Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak, in an interview to APP on Wednesday.
He said encounters with street criminals, vehicle lifters, Karachi Police has succeeded in eliminating/arresting many outlaws and gangs. As regards action against terrorism, the Sindh Police Chief said that due to extra vigilance and preventive measures by Police there has been no major act of terrorism/bomb blast during last 3 months in Karachi as well as in interior Sindh.
He specifically referred to the incident of September 26, 2008 when CID Sindh and Lyari Police, on secret information, conducted raid on the hideout of LJ Terrorists in Baldia town. He said that after an encounter police arrested terrorist Raheemullah @ Ali Hassan, who was wanted in Nishter Park bomb blast, murder of Allama Hassan Turrabi and attack on SP Lyari.
The encounter, he pointed out, finally ended when 3 terrorists, after being mortally hit by Police firing, blew up the house which was completely destroyed due to blast. Police later found 3 dead bodies of terrorists and one that of hostage namely Shoukat Afridi Transporter, who was kidnapped 4 months ago. He said Police recovered substantial number of explosives, sophisticated firearms, suicide jackets and other bomb making implements.
The terrorists killed, were later identified as (1) Masroor Shah @ Munna, (2) Noor Muhammad @ Umer, (3) Fahim @ Zabair Bangali affiliated with Laskar-e-Jhangvi.
Eulogising the police performance, the IGP gave comparative figures to defend his claim. He said following statistics highlight Police action since July 2008. Police Shaheed 19, Police Injured 62, Gangs Busted 173, Dacoits eliminated 56, Dacoits/Criminals arrested 3262, Encounters 732, POs arrested 409, absconders arrested 8196, Patharidars arrested 101.
During this period, he informed, police recovered SMGs 212, rifles 123, shotguns/repeaters 408, pistols/revolvers 2606, hand grenades/rocket launchers 20, ammunition 19,644 besides recovering 607 cars, 1105 motorcycles, 470 mobile telephones. He also provided comparative figures of street crimes/vehicle crime, kidnapping for ransom for the months of March and September 2008 and October (15 days) as under: bMonth Mobile AVG. 4-Wheelers Avg. 2-Wheeler Avg.
