The NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani while eulogising the spirit and services of all the concerned governmental and non-government organisations especially the Unicef, UNHCR, WFP, WHO, UNFPO, MSF France as well as the Pakistan Red Crescent Society in helping the government to look after the internally displaced persons (IDPs).
"I place on record, this is humanitarian problem and we really appreciate the contribution and services of all the organisations, engaged in sharing our responsibilities in taking care of the displaced persons", he said.
Presiding over a high level meeting at Governor's House, Peshawar on Wednesday, the Governor further said "I also want to remain closely in touch with the state of facilities being provided in the relief camps and each and every respective organisation should keep me informed regularly on daily basis".
He welcomed the relief goods received from Punjab government to facilitate the displaced persons. The provincial Relief Commissioner Nazir Amjad briefed the meeting about the prevailing state of services being extended to the needy people.
Though, the Governor further pointed out, it is a temporary phenomena and the situation will hopefully be improved in near future, yet, he added, we have to make adequate arrangements to meet at least minimum requirements of the displaced persons.
In this connection, he said, we have to keep in mind; the requirements of the internally displaced persons in the wake of ensuing winter season and timely steps have to be taken to minimise their requirements to the maximum level.
He also took keen interest in ensuring availability of elementary level educational facilities within the jurisdiction of relief camps and noted with appreciation that solid steps are already underway both by the government and the non-governmental organisations especially the Unicef in this respect as well.
He keenly observed the arrangements, underway to ensure availability of suitable sanitation and hygienic facilities especially cleans potable water at the camps and desired that efforts have to be continued in meeting the requirements. No doubt, he said, adequate arrangements are already underway to ensure safety and security at the relief camps, yet at the same time, he added, we should also continue our efforts to ensure fully secured living environment for the displaced persons in all respects.
Meanwhile, the meeting reviewed the arrangements underway to provide suitable accommodation facilities to the internally displaced persons as well as to meet their requirements of immediate nature and it was decided to further streamline the efforts for ensuring better conditions at the relief camps.
Amjad Nazir, Provincial Relief Commissioner while briefing the meeting said that a total of nine relief camps have been established in Dir Lower, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Charsadda, Nowshera and Peshawar districts and though adequate arrangements are underway to meet immediate needs of the displaced persons yet efforts are also continued to further improve the situation.
The provincial government, he said, has already spent a total of Rs 100 millions, apart from the contribution being made by the humanitarian organisations in looking after the internally displaced persons. Similarly, he said, the Federal Government has also committed to provide Rs 100 millions for this purpose.
In this connection, he said, a high powered committee has been constituted which meets regularly on weekly basis to review the over all requirements of the displaced persons while five cluster offices are also working efficiently to judge the ground situation in ensuring availability of various nature of facilities especially at the relief camps.
Besides, he said, the respective district co-ordination officers are also directly involved in providing relief to the displaced persons. Apart from the relief camps, he said, a big majority of internally displaced persons have been accepted by their relatives and well-wishers as their guests as well.
