Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday said that Pakistan is fully committed to wipe out terrorism and extremism in the tribal areas with the help of local people, but US attacks inside Pakistani territory sabotage the government efforts.
He said using force is not the solution of any issue and the government would withdraw military from the tribal areas soon after the government and the local elders signed fresh agreements. He said that army been sent there to control the situation and "the army is operating there with the government permission," he said.
Prime Minister was addressing a news conference at the Prime Minister House after his return from China. Gilani said the international community recognises Pakistan's vital role against the threat of terrorism and earnestly wants to work with it in countering its security and economic challenges. The Prime Minister briefed his interactions with the world leaders at the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Beijing.
The Prime Minister said that during his meetings with the Asian and Europeans leaders in China his point of view on the terrorism and extremism was widely supported, saying that he asked the world leaders that any aggression from the Nato forces within the Pakistani territory weaken our position at the time when the government engages with the local elders to motivate them against the militants.
Entire nation is untied to abolish terrorism and extremism for which we need to strengthen our LEAs and the international community is also supporting in this regard, he added. At the same time, he said, free mobilisation of militants across the Pakistanis also against the international treaties made by Pakistan with other countries.
Gilani said that terrorists and extremists have no religion neither they have any boundary whose prime objective is to destabilise Pakistan's economy and democracy. He said more than 40 leaders at the ASEM summit held detailed discussions on the global financial crisis and how to aid countries facing economic turmoil.
The leaders from Europe and Asia resolved to utilise the international financial institutions to avert the financial meltdown, Gilani said. On the ongoing economic crisis, the Prime Minister said that it was a global issue, which has hit entire world along with Pakistan.
To a question, the Prime Minister said, the government would consider if we have to bailout our economy as the Advisor on the Finance and Economy had held meetings with the International financial institutions.
To a question, the Prime Minister said that he would support to form a committee in the Parliament the proposed amendments in a bid to make balance of power between the Parliament and the Presidency. He said PPP believes in democracy and the Prime Minister, Ministers and Parliamentary secretaries are answerable to the Parliament.
However, he dispelled the impression that like the previous regime, all the decisions are being made at the presidency, saying that the President and the Prime Minister are from one party and have good working relations whereas every decision is being taken with mutual consensus and understanding. "It is unfair to compare the present government with the previous one", he remarked.
He said that every decision would be taken in the Parliament and Speaker National Assembly would take initiative in this regard. To a question, the Prime Minister said that the expansion of federal cabinet would be taken place within a couple of days as the consultations with the coalition partners have been completed.
Gilani opined that Pakistan wants to have a good relations with the neighbouring counties that's why he had held a special meeting with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh recently in Beijing. Besides, he termed the joint resolution in Parliament on the National Security Policy is an unprecedented development in the history of Pakistan towards tackling of the issues of national importance.
