Lawyers held a "mammoth protest rally" on Thursday to press the government to reinstate all the sacked judges. Former judge of High Court, justice Jehangir Arshad, suspended President Mehmood Ashraf Khan and General Secretary Naveed Akhtar of High Court Bar Association led the rally.
Victory of the progressive group in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections over the government-backed candidates has strengthened the position lawyers. Deposed President of High Court Bar Multan, Mehmood Ashraf Khan has said that lawyers' movement has made history by securing a landslide victory in SCBA elections.
Election observers find a high cost campaign by the anti-movement lawyers to seek victory of their candidate. He alleged that buying of voters and their enrolment as members of the Bar was carried out just to get their votes for Zafar. However, these charges could not be proved on material evidence.
He said that Kurd has received added responsibility after his predecessor in the office has tagged the solution to the current economic problems and menace of terrorism with the independence of judiciary, for which he now would need to resume struggle to bring back Justice Chaudhry to the office.
The firebrand Kurd had previously enthralled the audiences but now would he is expected to do something practical. So he would not be able to ignore the level of public and community expectations the quantum of which is vulnerable to the deteriorating economic condition of the public.
Winners in the unofficial result: President, Ali Ahmad Kurd secured 1009 votes against 506 of M Zafar), Vice President Punjab, Javed Jalil Mian (841), Vice President Balochistan, M Ayyaz Khan Swati (925), Vice President NWFP, Muhammad Saeed Khan Akhtar (810), Vice President Sindh, Muhammad Sohail Hayat Khan Rana (628), Secretary Shoukat Umar Pirzada (812), Additional Secretary Zulfiqar Khalid Malooka (880) and Finance Secretary Sheikh Ehsanud Din (923).
