The President has appointed Vice Admiral Asaf Humayun as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff with immediate effect, said a notification issued. Vice Admiral Asaf Humayun joined Pakistan Navy in December 1970. He stood first in his course in Pakistan Naval Academy. He was selected on merit to finish his training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, United Kingdom.
He topped his class in UK and was commissioned as Sub Lieutenant in June 1973 in the Operations Branch. Admiral is a submariner by specialisation. He performed various duties at sea and was among the commissioning crew of PNS/M Hashmat from France. Admiral Asaf's first sea command was submarine Hangor in 1984 as Lieutenant Commander.
On leaving PNS/M Hangor, he qualified the Naval Staff Course at US Naval War College Newport, Rhode Island, USA with distinction. In 1986 - 1989, he commanded PNS/M Shushuk and was awarded Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Military) for outstanding performance. Then, he was appointed Director Submarine Operations at Naval Headquarters in 1989.
The Admiral served as Naval Attache in New Delhi (India) during 1992-95. On return he was appointed at Naval Headquarters as Project Manager Jinnah Naval Base Ormara. As Captain, he commanded PNS Tippu Sultan and PNS Shahjahan. He served for 2 years as Commander Submarines, commanding the punch of Pakistan Navy, where he was promoted to the rank of Commodore in July 1998.
Thereafter, he attended National Defence Course Islamabad. His subsequent appointment as Naval Secretary at Naval Headquarters brought new dimensions in the career planning and grooming of officer cadre in Pakistan Navy. He was promoted to Flag rank in 2002. As Rear Admiral, he headed Maritime Technologies Complex employing his operational knowledge for the development of naval technology.
He took over Command of PN Fleet as Compak in January 2006. There, he successfully supervised the first ever multinational naval exercise held in Pakistan "Aman 07". Before being appointed as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral was serving as Chief of Staff at Naval Headquarters in Islamabad. During his career the Admiral has been awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military) and Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military). His interests include reading and exploring Naval Technology, Maritime Developments, Science, Computers, Management and Leadership issues. He is also a keen golfer.
