Muhammad Latif Chaudhary has been proposed as chairman of The Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills' Association (PSRMA) for the year 2008-2009. The decision was announced in general body meeting of PSRMA at a local hotel, which was presided by outgoing Vice-chairman Karachi Circle Ali Ahmed.
The meeting was also informed that the meeting of newly elected members of executive committee of Karachi circle was held on October 16 at the association office at SITE. Prior to the meeting, it unanimously elected Irshad Mowjee as Vice-Chairman Karachi Circle for the year 2008-2009, while the following members were unanimously elected as the members of executive committee.
The members include Irshad Mowjee, M. Latif Chaudhary, Ghulam Ali Bhattia, Ali Asghar, M. Hanif Jewani and Masood Sadiq. In his address, the outgoing vice chairman Ali Ahmed said that during last year tenure, the association faced many problems including prolonged and frequent power outages, global financial crisis, which badly affected the growth of rolling mill industry.
He said that the association resolved the problems created by PSQCA, banning of twisted bars, increased role of Engineering Development Board (EDB) and problem of income tax in consequences of "Special Procedure" SRO-678 (I)/2008.
He said that after various meeting with PSQCA they agreed to maintain good standard and opened their products for tests, adding that they opposed the heavy stamping fee and also firmly contended that PSQCA should carry out tests at their expenses.
He said that they convinced the authority of PSQCA that the standard of products depends upon the raw material available in the country. Ali Ahmed said that the association also addressed the problem of banning of twisted steel bars, adding, they had set their stance that all the collapsed buildings by earthquake were built with steel deformed bars, while the cold twisted bars were not at all used in these buildings.
