The High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Multan unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday, demanding the government to try former president Pervez Musharraf for treason. The resolution said that Musharraf should be tried as he had "illegally suspended the constitution and deposed 60 superior judges".
Lawyers in the HCBA general house meeting also accused the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) government of defending Musharraf and hindering the reinstatement of the sacked judges. Addressing lawyers, former president of HCBA Mehmood Ashraf Khan, general secretary Rana Naveed Akhtar said that the government was "making a mockery of democracy by hindering the rule of law and the judiciary's independence".
They said, "The ruling party is not the PPP that Benazir headed." They said the lawyers would never negotiate with a President who "reneged on his written and verbal promises to restore deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry."
