The BPD journey continues. As we watch yesteryears in the rear view mirror, it is heartening to acknowledge that the advent of BPD which had a humble beginning in 2002 has grown in depth and spread over the years to become one of the most sought after corporate conference in Pakistan.
Best Practices Day started in good times. In year 2002 the economy was witnessing an upward trend and the business community was optimistic of expansion and progress. It was a time when local and multinational companies were enjoying top and bottom line growth, new entrants were setting up shop, and a number of existing entities were busy in organisational transformation by adopting emerging practices and adopting their organisational cultures to meet the challenges of modern times.
Growth brings challenges too. The competition for resources intensifies, and the marketplace is rampant with profit seekers who may only have short term gains in mind. SHMA realised the fact that, while some companies were surfing effortlessly and riding the waves of prosperity, others were stumbling and falling without grace. The need for an event was felt that could serve as a platform for successful business practitioners to share their best practices. BPD was introduced to serve as the corporate event which fosters adopting "best practices" and "learning though sharing".
The efforts gathered momentum with each passing day until they finally culminated into the first best practices day conference on the 21st of November 2002. The event was highly appreciated by participants and the generous inflow of compliments and positive feedback was convincing evidence of the success achieved by the pioneering BPD event. It paved the way to make BPD an annual conference consistent with the demands of the business community in Pakistan.
There has been no looking back since the first event in 2002. The support and patronage extended to BPD by the corporate sector in Pakistan provided the much need impetus for Sidat Hyder to embark on a journey of reinforcing a knowledge sharing culture in Pakistan's corporate sector through the Best Practices Day event.
Over the years, the BPD conference has expanded its horizons in terms of geographical spread, scope, content and audience. In 2004 the event proceedings witnessed a slight albeit important modification; the panel discussion. The purpose of this segment was to invite a group of specialists to hold an interactive discussion and share their thoughts on a business related topic in a moderated group discussion followed by a quick round of questions and answers. The panel discussions were held simultaneously alongside the speaker session, which in the past had been the event's main attraction. The Media Room was another feature introduced in Best Practices Day 2005, providing exclusive media coverage of the event on television and radio. It was used by speakers, panellists and delegates to provide direct feedback about the event and express their views on the importance of benchmarking best practices in the contemporary business world.
Last year's Best Practices Day event broke the geographical barrier and ventured outside Karachi for the first time. BPD 2007 was held simultaneously in Karachi and Islamabad. This extension was made in response to the demand of sponsors and participants who felt that the concept of "learning through sharing" should spread to other parts of corporate Pakistan.
The BPD journey continues in 2008. The road ahead may seem bumpy and the vision may blur and become somewhat hazy, as dark clouds of uncertainty gather overhead to challenge our national pride. These may be trying times for many a corporate entity and the significance of Best Practices in such times is as relevant as ever before. It is therefore a matter of great satisfaction to Sidat Hyder as Event Manager of BPD 2008 to expand the horizon to also include Lahore. The inclusion of Lahore makes BPD a national event which is held in all the three major business centers of the country.
Today BPD has become an epitome of corporate knowledge sharing in Pakistan but its destiny does not confine to Pakistan....sky is the limit. Very soon, BPD aims to go international presenting an opportunity for corporate executives, businessmen and professionals beyond the national border representing a diverse range of cultures to consolidate at this platform and learn from the best in class through real world experiences. With the continued patronage of the sponsors and other participants, we hope that in the year 2009, BPD will take its first step towards this vision by having a conference in Dubai.
