Punjab Minister for Agriculture Malik Ahmed Ali Aulakh has underlined the need for more production of wheat crop, saying various schemes for the welfare of growers have been launched by the department under Agriculture Development Programme in the province.
Talking to newsmen here on Friday the minister said wheat was being sown over an area of 17 million acres in Punjab and wheat sowing over an area of 785,657 acres has been completed showing an achievement of five percent target.
He said that an area of 28,40,138 acres would be brought under wheat cultivation in Barani (rain-fed) areas, 4,95,386 acre in Multan district, 4,19,090 in Lodhran, 632,262 in Vehari, 5,62,010 in Khanewal, 370,733 in Sahiwal, 352,465 in Pakpattan, 735,019 in Bahawalpur, 865,044 in Bahawalnagar, 801,642 in Rahim Yar Khan, 461,000 in Dera Ghazi Khan, 770,480 in Muzaffargarh, 380,405 in Rajanpur, 520,101 in Layyah, 706,005 in Faisalabad, 416,941 in Toba Tek Singh, 987,547 in Jhang, 607,143 in Gujranawala, 393,300 in Hafizabad, 382,554 in Gujrat, 3,25,600 in Mandi Bahauddin, 539,444 in Sialkot, 4,15,866 Narowal, 1,53,666 in Lahore, 4,60,999 in Sheikhupura, 4,22,313 in Nankana Sahib, 4,78,192 in Kasur, 513,654 in Okara, 548,040 in Sargodha, 226,738 in Khushab, 421,239 in Bhakkar, 440,581 in Mianwali, 323,451 in Rawalpindi, 323,451 in Chakwal, 139,697 in Jhelum and 416,941 in Attock district.
He stressed the officers concerned to make all out efforts for achieving extra-wheat production in the province and to help out the country in overcoming the flour and wheat shortage. He said pragmatic measures were essential by the agriculture department to achieve the set targets.
The Agriculture Minister directed the officers of the department to ensure provision of best wheat seeds and fertilisers to the farmers on control rate, so that extra land could be used for wheat cultivation to achieve a target of additional 7percent wheat compared to the last year.
