Minister for Postal Services Mir Israrullah Zehri said on Friday that Pakistan Post would be modernised and upgraded throughout the country and brought at par with the international standards. This he said during his first visit to the Pakistan Post headquarters.
The minister was received by Director General Pakistan Post, senior officers and office-bearers of the employees union and staff of the institution. The minister said that during his tenure as minister Pakistan Post would remain committed to make secure and timely delivery of mail, money and material at the doorsteps of the customers at affordable cost.
While briefing the minister, DG Pakistan Post Muhammad Ahmed Mian said that Pakistan Post has a broad and varied role to play beyond provision of communication link for individuals and businesses. He said that keeping pace with the changing communications market, Pakistan Post is emphasising in the use of new communication and information technologies to move beyond what is traditionally regarded as a its core postal business.
The DG said that Pakistan Post is providing postal services in every nook and corner of the country through a network of around 13,000 post offices. Pakistan Post is providing delivery services to about 20 million households and businesses, as community service without any cost considerations.
In addition to its traditional role, the Pakistan Post also performs agency functions on behalf of Federal and Provincial governments, which inter-alias include Saving Bank, Postal Life Insurance, Collection of Taxes, Collection of Electricity, Water, Sui Gas and Telephone bills, he added. General Secretary of the Employees Union Moazzam Ali Zahid hoped that during Israrullah Zehri's tenure, as the first minister for postal services, the institution would be modernised and upgraded.
