Pakistan Muslim League-Q central leader and former Punjab chief minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Saturday said that India is showing stubborn attitude on water issue like Kashmir problem because it has not provided any detail after stoppage of River Chenab water, which is open violation of Indus Water Basin Treaty.
While addressing a consultative meeting with the PML-Q legislators, office bearers and ticket holders from Multan and Lodhran, here at Muslim League House on Saturday, Elahi said no further 'latitude' must be given to India on water issue. "Punjab is the worst effectee of water shortage but present rulers are playing the role of silent spectators", he said. He added that India had declined to give facts and figures regarding inflow and outflow of River Chenab water on Baglihar dam.
Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Zaheeruddin, Muhammad Basharat Raja, Arshad Khan Lodhi and Shaheena Farooqui were also present on the occasion. Elahi said, "our farmers and agriculture would be destroyed due to water shortage and after the imposition of agriculture tax". In view of current economic crisis, the government should pay attention for strengthening of the country's agriculture sector, however, the government has not so far made public any strategy aimed at betterment of agriculture sector and resolution of problems confronted to the farmers, he said.
