Of late, a steep rise in the price of essential commodities has made the life of a poor Pakistani miserable. When the poor finds it impossible to make both ends meet, he reacts either by self-immolation or resorts to committing suicide along with his small children. Such examples are rampant in our society these days.
In the face of such adversaries, the government of Punjab has undertaken the responsibility to provide Roti to the poor at an affordable price throughout the province. For this purpose, it has established Sasta Tandoors wherefrom one can buy Roti and Naan for Rs 2/- and for Rs 5/- respectively. Obviously, to keep these Tandoors afloat the funds are being provided by the government of Punjab.
In a way it is a good step taken by the government and deserves appreciation at all levels. However, is this not a fact that setting up of parallel systems like Itwar Bazaar, Utility Stores and Sasta Tandoor is an indication that the already existing system has failed to deliver and the government has no intention to set it right?.
On the contrary, setting up of Sasta Tandoors by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is certainly most commendable by all means. Unlike the government of Punjab, the PTI has generated the funds at its own level and is running the Sasta Tandoors successfully in Lahore, Islamabad, Pattoki, Peshawar and Rawalpindi where the Roti and Naan are being sold for Rs 2/- and Rs 3/- respectively.
In the past too, after setting up of the Shaukat Khanam Cancer Hospital -the biggest charitable institution in Pakistan - Imran Khan has also opened up a technical college in Namal in District Mianwali and has got it affiliated with the Bradford University UK. Incidentally, he also heads it as the honorary Vice Chancellor of the university.
In retrospect, the mammoth contribution made by Imran Khan in the social sector reminds one of his saying that to do any good work for the people, one need not to be a part of a government at all. In fact he has proved it by setting his own example.
